Where DataMatrix Is Used

Pharmaceutical unit-of-use labelling

EU FMD (Falsified Medicines Directive) requires DataMatrix on individual drug packs.

Medical device tracking (UDI)

FDA UDI requirements for medical devices mandate DataMatrix or QR on device labels.

PCB and electronics component labelling

Tiny DataMatrix codes are laser-etched onto circuit boards and chips for traceability.

Aerospace and automotive parts

Small component labels where space is severely limited but data density is critical.

Clinical laboratory samples

Sample tube labels at 5–10mm size that still carry full patient and sample data.

When to Use DataMatrix

  • ✓ You need a 2D barcode on a very small label or item
  • ✓ You're labelling pharmaceutical, medical, or regulated products
  • ✓ You need high error correction — the label might get scratched or partially obscured
  • ✓ Your industry standard specifically requires DataMatrix (pharma, aerospace)

When NOT to Use DataMatrix

  • ✗ Consumer retail scanning at POS — use EAN-13 or UPC-A
  • ✗ Logistics and shipping — Code 128 is the standard
  • ✗ Storing URLs for phone scanning — QR code has wider smartphone support
